CONTEXT

The Tweed Shire is located in the north-eastern corner of New South Wales, on the eastern coast of Australia, with the Pacific Ocean forming the boarder.

 

Together the shire has a total combined area of 1303km²

LANDSCAPE FEATURES

Mt. Warning (1156m)

 

Located 14 kilometres south-west from Murwillumbah, Mount Warning is Tweed’s most prominent mountain top. Once an active volcano, it now remains a volcanic plug of the now-gone Tweed Volcano.

Scenic Rim

 

A group of forested mountain ranges of the Great Dividing Range, hugging the border between north-eastern New South Wales and south-eastern Queensland. The geology of the Scenic Rim is largely volcanic in origin, deriving from the prehistoric Tweed Volcano. Thus providing the region with mainly basaltic soils.

The region is home to a broad range of wildlife:

 

Holds bio-geographical significance

Provides a variety of habitats

Has the highest number of rare and threatened species of flora & fauna

 

The Tweed Shire also boasts the highest level of biological diversity in Australia.

CLIMATE

CONTAMINATED LANDS

  

Surrounding the area, 3 mountain ranges exist:

 

 -Mc Phersons Range to the north

 -Tweed Range to the west

 -Nightcap Range to the south

Contaminated land refers to land that has been contaminated by hazardous substances and may pose a risk to human health or the environment. Land contamination can occur as a result for industrial or commercial activities. Particularly within the Tweed region, this contamination is a direct result of the land being utilized for landfill, cattle tick dips and tanneries. Indicated in orange are the noted sites in the Contaminated Land Register (CLR), which are proven contaminated land. Council evaluation of contaminated lands within Burringbar, and surrounds are yet to be completed.
